Decorative Plaster

If you are looking for a wall finish that has the look of marble, or shows some depth and character, polished or venetian plaster will give you that desired attraction. This finish will have the look of highly polished areas and lower areas that are less polished. This dimension gives the wall depth and perspective. Marble has been used to describe the depth and sheen of venetian plaster because of its layers of luster and degrees and shades of color. If you’re looking for an appearance that goes beyond the standard painted wall and décor, a hand troweled plastered finish will give your wall that second look. Polished plaster will give subtle depth to every square foot of your wall or focal point.  Please call today or “contact us” for a quote.  Please read below for more details.

Wall Prep
The wall must be primed and painted with at quality primer and base coat. The base boards and window trim must be taped off. The furniture will need to be covered or moved out of the project space.

Step 1.

The skim coat or base coat may be applied after all wall repairs or imperfections have been addressed. The skim coat is applied evenly and consistently over the wall surface. Be sure to maintain a consistent pattern and texture. Allow the skim coat to dry.

Step 2.

The second coat is described as the texture coat. This coat fills in any low areas left by the skim coat and applies some depth of texture to the wall. Allow this application to dry. This coat will take a little longer to dry because of the thickness of the material. The texture coat is generally thicker than the skim coat.

Step 3.

An additional skim coat will be applied over the texture coat. This last coat will enhance the texture coat and will bring out that multidimensional look that is desired with venetian plaster.

Step 4.

The plaster will be sanded very shortly after the last skim coat has dried. While the last skim coat is somewhat soft, the surface is sanded with a 400 grit paper and then wiped clean with a dry or damp cloth. The final sanding is done with 600 grit sand paper.

A clean trowel may be used to apply some additional polishing to the wall. Authentic Venetian Plaster will become harder over time and is very durable. The plaster is washable but not scrubbable.

It is important to apply thin even coats to the wall.
