Residential Solar Panel Installation
When faced with disasters such as hurricanes and hail, it’s time to replace your roof’s solar panels. If it isn’t due to bad weather, the damages may be from impact from stones, stray balls and other hard objects (that can cause considerable damage to the panels).
Fortunately, solar panels aren’t so disposable that you can throw them away if they become broken. To repair these damaged solar roof panels, here’s what you can do:
Step 1 – Assess the Damage
If your place has just been hit by a hurricane, then your solar panels have, most likely, suffered serious damage. Begin the assessment of the extent of the beating your solar panels have received. Start with the mounting frame, glass components and, finally, the wiring.
Step 2 – Repair the Mounting Frame
An important point to remember is that while checking the mounting frame of the solar roof panels, look closely at the bolts and cables that hold the mounting frame in place. The strong winds that accompany a hurricane can weaken the anchors. If you notice that some of the bolts and cables have become loose, tighten them to prevent the solar panels from falling off of the roof. To reinforce and secure your mounting frame, make sure that all broken cables are replaced.
Step 3 – Repair Broken Glass
Before trying to repair any broken glass on your solar panels, make sure that the panel still works. To test if it’s still good, leave the panels as they are for an entire day and see if they still generate energy. Broken solar panels don’t generate much energy so don’t think that your solar panels need replacing if the energy generated is very low after leaving the panels as they are for the day.
If the roof solar panels still generate energy despite the poor condition, you may now repair the broken glass on the panel. If the damage is minor, such as cracks around edges and corners, these don’t need replacing. Simply use small pieces of stained glass tape to reattach any small, broken parts. Just make sure that you trim the tape neatly, so that it doesn’t cover too big of a surface.
To completely replace the broken glass, remove the glass from their mounts and attach new glass.
Step 4 – Repair Loose Connections
Repair loose connections in your solar panel by cutting in the silicone that embeds the solar cells. Once these cells are exposed, carefully reach to the back of these cells and reattach the loose connections.
If a soldering gun is too difficult for you to use, try using a silver-impregnated glue to reattach the parts.
Step 5 – Repair Burnt Terminals
Finally, test out the terminals on your solar panels. Check which ones are no longer working, and replace the burnt-out terminals with new ones.
